End of the Rainbow

Trump’s offer of “safe refuge” to white South African farmers, along with the issues raised around ownership, safety and land, again highlight the economic disparity in South Africa and point to the ongoing unravelling of the rainbow nation.

Archbishop Tutu characterized South Africa as the rainbow nation during our first democratic election in 1994 - a vision expressing hope and aspiration.

The installation questions the idealism of this vision of a unified, equal, and non-racial nation in the post-apartheid era.

The hanging thread alludes to the rainbow nation becoming undone.

End of the Rainbow is an extension of a flag series I've worked on and an exploration into South African identity.
